“The Sunset Strip had all of these wonderful bars,” says Lillian Faderman, coauthor of the 2006 book Gay L.A.: A History of Sexual Outlaws, Power Politics and Lipstick Lesbians. That’s when the 1.7-mile-long stretch of Sunset here became a haven for speakeasies and casinos partly because it fell outside the reach of the hyper-vigilant LAPD and inside the jurisdiction of the relatively lax L.A. To understand how West Hollywood’s role in LGBTQ life came to be, you have to go back to the Prohibition era.

But that alone doesn’t really explain how West Hollywood, a town of 36,000 residents, became the symbolic heart of LGBTQ L.A., a community whose own outlines stretch far beyond the 1.9-square-mile city. When it became an official city in 1984 and established a majority-gay city council, it made headlines as America’s first gay municipality. With its rainbow-colored crosswalks and blocks of out-and-proud bars and clothing stores, West Hollywood stands tall as the visible symbol of gay Los Angeles.
